Welcome to Rangamati Hill District Council
BackgroundWith the objective of ensuring the overall socio-economic development of the less developed people of this district, Rangamati Hill District Council (the then Rangamati Local Govt. Council) was created on 6th March 1989 by the act of 19 of 1989. Honourable President consented to this act on 26th February 1989 and then this was published in Bangladesh Gazette on 6th March 1989. In consequence of this law, a general election was held on 25th June 1989 and a council consisting one chairman (tribal) & 30 tribal and non-tribal members was formed.
On the basis of historical peace accord signed on 2nd December 1997 between the National Committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts and PCJSS, some major amendments, passed in National Assembly in 1998, have been done in the aforesaid act by the act of 9 of 1998. By the act of 9 of 1998, after peace accord, this council is now renamed as Rangamati Hill District Council.
This council has started functioning from its inception with the tasks of co-ordination of all sorts of works of Government of Banglades & NGOs operatng in Rangamati Hill District. It implements various development projects and administers the different government & semi government departments transferred to the council. After the historical peace accord, the government has taken various steps to strengthen the council. Some new departments will be transferred to this council and formulation of necessary by-laws and rules are under process.
The government has taken steps to implement the overall development activities related to the transfered departments through this council. The government allocation to this council has remarkably been increased.
So, for fulfilling the long cherished goal of its people, Rangamati Hill District Council has now been regarded as the main focal point of administration as well as development activities of this Rangamati Hill District.
